**Major Duties**
- Inspects work accomplished by other General Equipment Mechanics, such as laying out/modifying/overhauling electrical equipment.
- Inspects large packing containers (ISO Shelters/MILVANS) for damage/missing parts/proper markings.
- Leads General Equipment Mechanics in work including fabricating and/or installing electrical, and plumbing; repairing overhauling, modifying or fabricating fixed and commercial equipment, alternators, starters, cylinders, sewing machines, pumps, etc.
- Performs lead duties such as distributing and balancing the workload among employees, assuring timely completion of workload, and assuring that all employees have enough work.
**Qualification Summary**
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of a General Equipment Repair Inspector without more than normal supervision such as assisting in the work of general mechanics in such tasks as repairing, overhauling, modifying or fabricating fixed/commercial equipment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort Frequently handles objects weighing up to 45 pounds and occasionally carries or moves objects weighing up to 70 pounds. Required to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions when working on shelters and equipment, or when welding. Normally obtains assistance on handling heavier items. Working Conditions Work is performed primarily inside of a shop area, on cement floors, and subject to loud noises, paint and solvent fumes, and contact with grease and dirt. The possibility of electrical shocks or burns is present in working on and testing electrical systems and when using electrical tools. Safety and Health Requirements: Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area where assigned, as directed by the supervisor. Types of protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following: eye, respiratory, and foot protection and protective clothing such as gloves, apron, and coveralls. Other types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials. If employee works near or around noise hazardous areas, machinery, or equipment, the employee will be required to wear approved hearing protective devices and an audiometric test will be conducted, as necessary.
